Aren’t they just stunning? The wonderful ladies at Basha have been hard at work over the last couple of months making our new collection of vintage sari kantha quilts and I have to say, I think they’ve outdone themselves again! The 12 new designs have just been released in the Decorator’s Notebook shop. Each is fully reversible with a colourful contrasting sari on each side and four more layers of cloth sewn in between with neat rows of traditional kantha stitching to create a lightly quilted effect. These are always super popular so pop over to the shop pronto so you don’t miss out on your favourite.
There’s some great news from Basha too, with the opening of their third office in Bangladesh a couple of months ago. Since the social enterprise launched they have gone from employing just 14 women to employing 50. All our kantha bedspreads are sewn from start to finish by just one woman, who adds a label embroidered with her name as a finishing touch. It’s lovely to see so many new names on our summer collection quilts and each one includes a link to the woman’s story so you can learn a little more about her – read all the Basha women’s stories here.
Just look at the team now! Robin Seyfert, Basha’s founder sent me this lovely photo of the women and their families at their recent team picnic. All of the women working at Basha have been supported to leave the streets, where many of them were trafficked and worked in the sex trade. Working at Basha opens up a whole new life for them and their children, with free childcare, education classes and subsidised medical bills, as well as the independence and self-respect that comes from earning a fair wage from dignified work. There’s lots more information about how the co-operative works in this post.
All our colourful kanthas are double size (200x200cm) and work perfectly as bedspreads, blankets, quilts or throws. Each one is made from repurposed sari cotton so is a one-of-a-kind design that will never be repeated – it’s not often nowadays you get to own something completely unique!
